4 college students from China hiking in NH call 911 for assistance off trail

WATERVILLE VALLEY — Four college students from China hiking in Waterville Valley called 911 for assistance as the trail got dark.

Fish and Game received a report of lost hikers on the Welch Dickey Trail Saturday around 9:30 p.m. The hikers reportedly had no flashlights and could no longer follow the trail.

Around 11 p.m., searchers found the four hikers a short way off the trail. The hikers - 27-year-old Qiuying Sun, 26-year-old Zhuang Guo, 24- year-old Xia Yan and 25-year-old Lubin Liu - were all from China and are students at Harvard University.

They started hiking around 5 p.m. and planned to hike the Welch Dickey loop but did not realize how long it would take to complete the hike, Fish and Game said. They did not plan on hiking after dark, so they had no lights or maps with them. When they could no longer see the blazes on the trail, they decided to call 911 to request assistance.

Nobody from the hiking party sustained any injuries.
